How to read the Atlas

Start with the filter barPick an island or tap an area and every section below redraws for that part of the islands: the cuisines, the dishes, the map, who is serving and the directory.
Serving means listed hoursA restaurant counts as serving when the time falls inside the opening hours on its public listing. Breakfast means open at 8:30 AM, lunch at 1:00 PM, dinner at 7:30 PM and late at 11:00 PM on at least one day.
Prices are before tax and serviceThe price levels here reflect menu prices. Every restaurant adds the 12% government tax, and some also add a 10% service charge, so the final bill can differ from the prices displayed. Check what each place charges.
Dishes come from dinersThe dishes shown for each restaurant are ones diners have named and praised in public Google reviews. Star ratings and review counts are shown as they appear on each listing.

What the islands cook

Every restaurant in the Atlas grouped by its style of cooking. Tap a style to see where it is served and what diners order there.

Dishes worth knowing

The plates diners name most often in their reviews, and where each one turns up. Tap a dish to see every restaurant where it has been praised.

Where the kitchens are

Each point sits at the restaurant's listed coordinates on the islands. Colour shows its style of cooking and size follows review volume. Tap a point to jump to it in the directory, or tap an empty spot, such as your villa or hotel, and the directory re-sorts by distance from there.

Common questions

How were the dishes chosen?

They are the dishes diners name and praise in the public Google reviews for each restaurant. Nothing is taken from menus or marketing, and a dish a reviewer criticised is left out. A restaurant with no dish shown simply has none named yet.

Where can I find conch?

Open Dishes worth knowing and tap Conch. It lists every restaurant where diners have praised a conch dish, from fritters and cracked conch to conch stew, and the list follows the island or area chosen in the filter bar.

What gets added to the bill?

Every restaurant adds the 12% government tax, which is required by law. Some stop there. Others also add a 10% service charge on top, so what you pay can be noticeably more than the menu price. It varies from place to place, so check the menu or the bill to see what that restaurant charges.

Do I need to tip on top?

Where a 10% service charge appears on the bill, many servers and restaurants still expect a gratuity on top of it. Where no service charge appears, 15 to 20% is the norm. Practice varies from place to place, so check what has been added and tip as you see fit.

Are these hours guaranteed?

No. They are the hours each restaurant publishes on its listing, and kitchens change them for holidays, private events, weather and the quieter months. For a special occasion, call ahead or book.

Why do some restaurants show no hours?

Their public listing does not publish opening hours. They still appear on the map and in the directory, but they are left out of the serving counts rather than guessed.

What about restaurants that close for the season?

Some take a break in the quieter months, usually around September and October. The Silly Season Schedule tracks those dates day by day, from the community list coordinated by Shannon Myers of SharkBite. This Atlas allows for the published breaks in its serving counts and flags a restaurant in the directory while it is on one.

Why are some well-known names missing?

The Atlas only includes restaurants with a public listing that could be checked. Private club dining, pop-ups and food trucks are left out, and some resort outlets do not publish a listing of their own. Private chefs and caterers have their own directory, the Private Chef & Catering Atlas.

Can anyone eat at a resort restaurant?

Many resort restaurants welcome outside diners, but not all. The restaurants at all-inclusive Beaches Turks and Caicos and at Ambergris Cay are for resort guests only, and they are marked Resort guests only throughout the Atlas. Choose Open to the public in the directory filter to leave them out. For any other resort, check its policy before you go.

My restaurant is missing or out of date. How do I fix it?

Use the Update a listing button in the owners section. Corrections, new openings and seasonal breaks are all welcome.

Staying longer than a holiday?

If a week of eating your way around the islands has you wondering what it would be like to live near your favourite table, I am happy to talk it through. I have lived in the Turks and Caicos since 1989 and help buyers and sellers across the islands.
